Science & Safety Room 1

Playing with Science
Written by Room 1
Our Science Hot-Spot was creating weather in a bottle. Mrs McLaughlan showed us "Hurricane in a bottle".
We had to explain what was happening in the bottle. It was amazing. It did not work the first time. We tried it again.
Some of us had bottles and then we made our own. It was hard getting the paint and glitter in the bottle. We all had a go.
We made it spin like a hurricane. When it was finished it was awesome.

These were some of our queries.
"Why is it spinning?" "How does it happen?" "Why is the glitter moving like that?" "What would happen if you added stones like a hurricane picks up?" "Why does the glitter float?"

We all get to explore and have a go
The motion of the bottle is important

We had someone take photos on the I.Pad
We were able to work together as a team

We listened to everyones queries and shared what we thought
You can make these at home

St Johns 2016

This is what an ambulance officer looks like

This week we had St Johns first aide. We meet Kathryn and she explained to us what happens in an ambulance. We got to see some special equipment that they can use if we end up in an ambulance.
We got to play with bandages, tried on some uniforms, talked about staying safe and learnt about what happens when an ambulance turns up to help someone.
We also talked about what to do if we get lost and who to trust.
This is a great introduction to our new Inquiry "Staying Safe".

Look at what happened!

2 of us can fit into this, showing great team work girls!

Our Past Few Weeks

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about:

Exploring like Scientists
For science were are learning to observe carefully, pay attention to detail. We had a big interest with "BUGS and CREEPY CRAWLIES". We were finding them everywhere and when we went out into the garden we hunted carefully, thinking where would they be?
We had magnifying lenses, and had some bug catchers. Some of us had the courage to touch and catch the insects and spiders.
We were able to observe carefully the parts of an insect and spiders and compared the similarities and differences. Then we did an observational drawing.

Exploring carefully

Can you spot the insect?
Why would an insect be there?

For a science "Hot Spot" we had an interest with taking things apart to see how they work.
Here are some mechanics with pieces to attach, then add some batteries and lights and try to get a fan to work.

Maths and our "Talk Buddies"
Our Shared Book was written by Joy Cowley. It is called Mrs OMalley and the Crocodiles.
Some crocodiles came to her house each day and Mrs OMalley had to send them away. For Maths we were able to solve some problems. These are called "Rich Tasks". We are learning to use our "Talk Buddy" to discuss, share and check our problems. We use lots of equipment and write our problems like mathematicians.
We were able to count the crocodiles in doubles

We are measuring water levels

Kids Edible Garden:
Room 1 had joint the kids edible garden. We have a wonderful organic garden at school.
When we explored the garden to see what has grown recently, we saw...... olives, pumpkins, oranges, beetroot, carrots, apples and pears.
Mrs Hepburn took Room 1 out to plant some new flower seeds and to get us all familiar with what is there. This programme is sponsored by the Council.
After that we were able to pick some ripe oranges, sweet carrots and beetroot.
Taking the beetroot back to class
Preparing the beetroot, this is fun!
Some of us were a bit reluctant to try some beetroot, but we all tried together and it was surprisingly "Yummy".
With Mrs Hepburn that takes the programme

WELCOME TO 2016

Kia Ora Everyone!

Welcome to our 2016 blog.
To start the year off we have 15 in our class.
This is one of the ways how you can follow our Learning in Room 1.

We have been discussing and creating our own Class Treaty. We made this Treaty together so we will have a happy, responsible learning environment to achieve our Goals and Learn together.

We are beginning to look at our Thinking Skills
We have met "Ida Ideas" and learnt that she makes us think creatively and have fun while thinking and creating "outside the box".

Check out our photos of us getting to know one another and setting up our classroom for 2016.

Room 1 enjoying the morning sunshine
Soon we are beginning our new Inquiry about 'Staying Safe' -
We just started school and we experienced an earthquake while we were in the class. We knew exactly what to do and covered ourselves under our tables and held onto the legs.
We love watching this video to remind us of what to do to 'Stay Safe' when an earthquake happens.

Here are some photos of our portraits! Then we wrote stories about who we are are and what we like.

Examples of our class rules and treaty
We will follow our rules to have a happy, healthy learning environment!
